An unusual find in the UK, this traditional smock type top is called a 'fugu' or 'batakari', and is usually worn by the men during ceremonies and festivals. Made from gonja cloth, which is woven from scratch and is very heavy, the stripe is hand dyed, and was originally made for Kings, but became used by the masses. It is a wonderful piece of social and textile history, as you can see the stitches to produce the smock, as well as the clever use of cheaper feed sack fabric to line the hem and create pockets.
Although this is shown on a female mannequin, and is traditionally worn by men, it can be worn by either gender.

• Made from a heavy weight textured cotton canvas type fabric
• No fastenings, designed to go over the head
